Science is amazing! Taking biology this spring has been especially interesting. One of the most enjoyable parts of the course is the weekly lab. I haven't been around microscopes or test tubes in a long time, so it has been fun to play around with scientific instruments again. My daughters have really loved hearing about all the different experiments. We have a child sized microscope at home, and after one of my classes where I learned how to prepare slides, I was able to make a slide with an onion cell. Everyone was so excited to see what the cell really looked like close up and how alive it really was.
As part of my lab class we were asked to find a scientific article to summarize. I wanted to find something that really appealed to me, something that was a little bit closer to my Mortuary Science major. I was thrilled when I found an article that studied how soil changes under decomposing corpses. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of changes that take place in the ecosystem below a human that is decomposing. It was surprising to learn though that bacteria that is commonly found in humans can remain in the soil long after the cadaver has been removed. This research could be fundamental in forensic science.
